« No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. » A great quote by Eleanor Roosevelt that I cannot but approve. There are many reasons you should stand up for yourself which doesn’t mean you’re looking for a fight or roaring like a tiger. It means that you’re not laying down like a lamb. There are plenty of good reasons to use your inner strength to defend yourself during an unfair situation. When a group of people or someone has chosen to bully or control you, they are in the wrong because their mistake is not to see you are worthy of respect and love. By behaving this way, they are not really fighting with you, but with their own crippling self esteem. That is why, standing up for your rights and for who you are isn’t impolite, nor weird, or rude. It’s in fact,a quality to be assertive enough to defend yourself when you need to. Therefore, it helps you to be more confident in other areas of your life.
I do think, it has become a conventional wisdom to stand up for yourself. Though some simple steps and practice, you can get much more comfortable with the idea of standing up and speaking frankly. First of all, remember that advocating for yourself means being assertive, not aggressive. You can start the process by calling a meeting with the person you’re in conflict and focus the conversation on what you need, rather than casting blame or criticizing. Secondly, know that standing up to someone who is actively trying to put you down is actually really empowering and brave. It can seem terrifying at first, not knowing what to say and how to say it, but once you have stood up for yourself calmly and assertively, you will find it easier and more natural doing it the next time. It doesn’t always mean that people will stop, but you will get stronger, and that will make a huge difference in the way you handle conflict in the future. Once you’ve made a habit of being strong in the presence of intimidating people, it will also become more natural to come to the defense of others who are in a similar situation. Plus, from seeing your »action » it will help others to take a great encouragement.
Last but not least, when you confidently put your needs and views forward, people will listen(if they are opened to it). And no matter what happens you’ll know you’ve made your best effort to resolve a difficult and frustrating situation, and you’ll have a much clearer idea of how to move forward. Furthermore, I would like to stress that, those tips aren’t the absolute key of fighting against, bullying or against people who may tend to control you. These advice are part from the keys to control your fears to speak aloud which are also improving your inner being. As I always say, » You’re the Captain of your own ship, nobody else has the right to lead your rudder ».
